What Is Hospice?

Hospice is a concept of care designed to enhance the quality of life and preserve the dignity of individuals with limited life expectancy. The hospice team consists of physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains and volunteers. The focus of the hospice team is to address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the terminally-ill patient while providing a network of support for caregivers and family. Hospice is founded on the principle that death is a natural part of life and on the belief that quality of life is just as important as quantity.

For the Patient...

Under the guidance of the patient's primary physician and the hospice medical director, the hospice team offers personalized care and service to manage pain and symptoms while providing for the spiritual, emotional and psychosocial needs of the patient throughout the progression of illness.

For the Caregivers and Family...

Hospice is not intended to replace the primary caregiver or family of the dying patient. It is designed to offer support, education and counseling. Support is provided through supplies, medication and equipment related to the hospice diagnosis. Respite care is offered to help alleviate caregiver stress. Grief counseling is available and provides encouragement for surviving family and friends. Highly trained, professional staff is available 24 hours a day to instruct and assist with care needs.

Where is Hospice Care Provided?

In most cases, care is provided in the patient's home. Hospice care may also be administered in freestanding hospice centers, hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Hospice services are available to patients of any age, religion, race or illness. Hospice care is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance plans and other managed care organizations.

Who can Request a Hospice Consultant?

Any physician, patient, family member, nurse or social worker may request an education visit from a Winyah Community Hospice Care representative. All consultations are private and free of charge. No medical chart may be reviewed or copied without a verbal or written physician's order.
